Fall 2025 – Spring 2026
What is Discord?
Discord is a free communication platform that lets users chat via text, voice, or video in organized communities called “servers.” It’s widely used by students and professionals for group collaboration—similar to Slack or Microsoft Teams—but with a more student-friendly interface. VESL uses Discord as a secure, moderated space for students and teachers to stay connected, access event info, and build community around esports and STEM.

All About Moderation
At VESL, the safety and well-being of our community is our top priority. We use multiple layers of moderation to ensure servers remain safe, inclusive, and supportive for all students and educators.
Only verified students, teachers, coaches, and approved school staff enrolled in VESL are allowed full access. Anyone who isn’t verified has restricted access with limited visibility and permissions.
Types of Moderation
- Auto Moderation: Smart automated tools that work 24/7 to detect and filter out inappropriate language, spam, and harmful links before they reach the community.
- Official Staff Moderators: VESL staff members provide top-level oversight, respond to issues, and ensure all community guidelines are upheld across the platform. They’re here to step in when needed and provide final decisions.
- Community Moderators: Carefully selected student leaders who model positive behavior, help answer questions, and step in when conversations need guidance. They’re trained to support a healthy, friendly environment.
VESL reserves the right to moderate its servers in the way it deems most appropriate. All moderation decisions are handled on a case-by-case basis, and final authority rests with the VESL staff.
FAQ
Is Discord required to participate in VESL?
No. Discord is completely optional; it’s one of the tools we offer to help students stay connected, get updates, and build community.
Can parents join the Discord servers?
Due to safety risks and verification being tied to enrolled students and staff, we don’t allow parents/guardians in the server at this time.
What happens if a student breaks the rules in Discord?
VESL staff handles each situation individually. Typically, students receive a warning, have certain permissions or access temporarily removed, and may be suspended or permanently banned depending on the severity. In serious cases, we coordinate directly with teachers to address the issue.
What kind of content is allowed?
All content must follow VESL’s community guidelines. That means no inappropriate language, bullying, or spam. We encourage respectful, inclusive conversation focused on esports, STEM, and student life.
Are the servers monitored 24/7?
While our staff and moderation tools are active throughout the day, real-time monitoring may not always be possible. That’s why we rely on smart auto-moderation tools and trained community moderators to help flag and manage issues quickly.
Can students use voice channels?
Yes, students can use voice channels, but they are monitored and subject to the same behavior expectations as text channels. Disruptive behavior may result in muted access or further moderation.
How do students get verified?
Students are verified through our platform, The NotWork, by a verified teacher.
