League Structure

The 2025-2026 VESL Season will adopt a tiered league structure with season play consisting of two competitive Splits. Both of these splits will have their own respective playoffs where a team’s final placement can earn points, called “Split Points”, to qualify for State Finals in Spring of 2026. All season play, match day communications, and Esports announcements will use the platform LeagueOS with some secondary communication happening via Discord, Text and/or email.

VESL reserves the right to modify league structure, team placements, tier limits, or seasonal formats at any time to preserve competitive balance, accommodate demand, or respond to unforeseen circumstances.

Split Points and Tiers +

Competitive Tiers

The Esports league will be divided into 3 tiers based upon skill level and program age.

Tier 1 (Premier): Team limit of 16 teams (split into two groups of 8). Once this tier reaches the cap, all other confirmed rosters will be placed into Tier 2. Established schools and state champions in their respective game will be considered first to be placed in Tier 1 followed by higher skill rosters. Weekly Play, followed by unified playoffs* and qualification points for State Finals.
Tier 2 (Contenders): New programs will be placed into Tier 2 as they try to form teams and commit to competing weekly in VESL. Lower skill level rosters will be allowed to compete in Tier 2. This tier is not gated by skill. Weekly Play, followed by unified playoffs* and qualification points for State Finals.
Tier 3 (Open): Monthly Tournament-Based play, non-season and more casual games. All students are included in Tier 3, regardless of participation in Tiers 1 or 2. All registered and verified students are eligible to participate in any available non-season, casual tournament-based game titles.

*Unified Playoffs = Mixed Tier 1 and Tier 2 playoffs.

Split Points

Once each split is over, teams will earn split points based on playoffs placement. These points will add together from each split to form a split points leaderboard for the season. After both splits are complete, the top 8 teams on the split points leaderboard will qualify for the Spring 2026 State Finals.

Regular Season Format +

Tier 1

The top 16 teams in each title will be split into two groups of 8 teams and compete over the course of a 6 week regular season. At the end of the regular season, the top 6 teams in each group will advance to playoffs and the bottom 2 teams in each group will play in the “Last Chance Qualifiers” (LCQ).

Tier 2

All teams will compete weekly in a Swiss-format based league. All teams will compete in a 6 week regular season. At the end of the regular season, the top 27 seeds will advance to the playoffs, seeds 28-36 will play in the “Last Chance Qualifiers” (LCQ) with all other seeds being eliminated from playoff contention.

Tier 3

All students are included in Tier 3, regardless of participation in Tiers 1 or 2. All registered and verified students are eligible to participate in any available non-season, casual tournament-based game titles.

Playoffs Format +

Structure

Maximum of 32 teams with a play-in round in the event of excess teams.
Teams will participate in a single elimination bracket all the way through until a winner is declared.
Based on a team's placement once playoffs are over, they will earn split points (chart below) and NotWork coins, which can be used to earn real-world prizes.

Eligibility +

Student Eligibility

A student is eligible for season play if they are registered and verified on The NotWork. They must also be in good standing with both VESL and their specific school program requirements. Some schools may implement GPA and other requirements set by their respective Teacher Liaisons.

Students may NOT participate across multiple teams in the same game title unless they are a substitute for teams that are in a higher tier. Once a student plays as a substitute more than half of the season on a higher-tier roster, that player will be moved up a tier and will be ineligible for play in lower-tier titles.

It is expected that all players' respective game accounts remain in good standing according to their TOS. If a player is banned or otherwise suspended, they may be deemed ineligible to participate in league activities until the ban/suspension period is over (subject to change). ALT accounts/Ringers/etc. will NOT be allowed unless otherwise stated by VESL Staff.

VESL reserves the right to make final eligibility decisions for all participants at its sole discretion.

Team Eligibility

Teams will be required to stay above the minimum requirement of players for the season. Teams are permitted to play a maximum of ONE player down in a match from the minimum requirements for the respective title in the event of extenuating circumstances. Teams are eligible to be removed if they do not meet this requirement.

Teams can receive strikes for each offense such as failing to show up for games without previous notice. Once the maximum number of strikes is reached, a team can be eligible for removal from the season. These strikes can also be received for behavioral issues as well.

VESL reserves the right to determine and enforce team eligibility at its sole discretion, including removal from the league for failure to meet participation or conduct standards.

Student and Team Warning System

VESL reserves the right to escalate or bypass disciplinary steps depending on the severity of the violation.

Level	Consequence
Verbal Warning	Explanation given to team or individual and/or meeting required by staff.
1st Official Warning	The team or individual will lose all bans for the next match.
2nd Official Warning	The team or individual will forfeit the next match.
3rd Official Warning	The team will be removed from the current split and possibly barred from participating in future events at the discretion of VESL Staff.

Team Types, Roster Rules & Postseason Eligibility

Schools will be allowed to from the following teams in each game title that they’re participating in: (1) Tier 1 team unless otherwise allowed by VESL Staff, (Unlimited) Tier 2 teams, (Unlimited) Tier 3 teams.

Teams will be allowed to have a maximum of three substitute players per game title.

The top EIGHT teams from each game title based on the season points leaderboard will qualify for States in Spring 2026. Final postseason eligibility is subject to review and approval by VESL. VESL reserves the right to adjust qualification pathways if needed.

Team Formation Process +

Process

Students are required to register on The NotWork and indicate their interest to participate in game title(s) for their school. VESL Staff will help to facilitate team formation. For schools that elect to form their own teams, VESL Staff will support as needed. VESL reserves the right to review and approve all team formations to ensure alignment with league structure and competitive integrity.

Participant Registration +

Registration Process

Students must register and be verified on VESL’s platform, The NotWork.
Students will register on LeagueOS under their school, and connect their NotWork email to their LeagueOS account.
Once registered on LeagueOS, the Student will be placed on a team by a VESL Staff/Coach or Teacher.
Once a team’s roster is ready, they will be placed into the season by VESL staff.
Upon registering a roster, players will have to complete current requirements like linking the associated game account (and NotWork email).
Once requirements have been completed for all players, the roster is eligible to compete in the season.

VESL reserves the right to approve, deny, or modify participant registrations and roster placements to maintain fairness, integrity, and smooth operation of the league.

Streaming Rules +

Requirements

Students may stream with a recommended 3 minutes of delay if:

A student is streaming their own POV
A student or school staff member is streaming their team's POV from the coach slot. In the case of b, a form will have to be submitted and approved by VESL Staff.

The team streaming from the coach/neutral slot is NOT allowed to talk to their team under any circumstances. Any violation of this rule will result in match forfeiture and considered for further disciplinary actions.

Other than VESL Production staff, players may NOT stream from any neutral observer slot unless otherwise approved by VESL Staff. VESL Staff reserves the right to prohibit spectators for any reason during a match to maintain competitive integrity.

Coaching Rules +

Communication Rules

If a team has a coach, they are permitted to be in the coach slot for a match. Any person sitting in the coach slot is subject to these rules:

Any talk during gameplay is strictly prohibited.

VALORANT: Coaches may only talk during the first pistol round of each half, during timeouts, and during the buy phase of the FIRST overtime round.
Rocket League & Super Smash Bros.: Coaches may only talk in between games and during timeouts.
Marvel Rivals & Overwatch 2: Coaches may only talk in between games, and during the pre-round of each half.
All Others: Coaches may only talk in between games.

Coaches may stand behind their teams in LAN environments, but the same communication rules outlined above apply for in-person tournaments. If any of these rules are broken, coaches and/or students will be subject to disciplinary actions at the discretion of the league including but not limited to game, split, or season forfeiture.

Rescheduling and Forfeits +

Reschedules

All weekly matches must be played by Saturday at 11:59 PM. If a team needs to reschedule, they’re able to request it on their designated match page through LeagueOS. NOTE: TEAMS ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO ACCEPT RESCHEDULES.

Forfeits

If a team is denied a reschedule and cannot participate in their weekly match, the opposing team will receive the Forfeit win for the match. Forfeits are typically only issued to teams that are more than 15 minutes late to their scheduled match with no communication. (FF - No Show). Forfeits can also be issued as a disciplinary action.

VESL reserves the right to manage, enforce, and override rescheduling and forfeits to ensure fairness, accountability, and smooth league operations.

Verification +

Verification Process

Only students who are verified on The NotWork will be eligible to participate in the official season. In order to be verified, students must contact their Teacher Liaison assigned to their school. Please contact VESL staff if you need assistance in this process!

VESL reserves the right to audit, deny, or revoke verification at any time to ensure compliance with league policies.

Score Reporting +

Requirements

Students must submit their match scores by 11:59 PM on the scheduled match day, including photo evidence for verification. Failure to report scores on time will result in a double forfeit (FF) for both teams, unless otherwise determined by VESL Staff.

VESL reserves the right to review, adjust, or override score submissions and forfeit rulings at its discretion.

General Policies

Eligibility +

Open to public, private, and charter high schools in North Carolina.
Students must be in grades 9–12 and enrolled full-time.
Academic eligibility must be verified by a school administrator.
Students must be registered and verified on The NotWork.

Equipment Guidelines +

Students are responsible for providing legal game licenses and necessary equipment.
VESL may provide support for under-resourced schools on a case-by-case basis. VESL is not obligated to do so.

Technology & Match Day Expectations +

Players are expected to be ready to play 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Teams must communicate early if they are experiencing technical delays.
Persistent tech issues must be reported via the official VESL help channels.
All players must use their main accounts for Discord and in-game.

Communication Platforms +

LeagueOS is the primary communication platform for match coordination, score reporting, and official announcements.
Discord, email and text can also be used as a secondary channel of communication for official announcements.
Teams are expected to check their LeagueOS Dashboard, Text and Email, and notifications before every match day.

All decisions made by the VESL staff are final. VESL staff reserves the right to amend the rules, schedule, format, or other processes at any time in order to ensure fairness or safety. Any changes will be clearly communicated to participants and/or teachers as soon as possible.

Introduction and Purpose

The Varsity Esports & STEM League (VESL) is dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and professional environment for all participants, including players, coaches, spectators, and staff. By participating in VESL activities, you agree to adhere to the following Code of Conduct

01. Respect and Inclusion +

Treat all participants, staff, and community members with respect and courtesy.
Avoid offensive, discriminatory, or inappropriate language, behavior, or gestures. This includes actions based on race, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristic.
Promote a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

02. Fair Play and Sportsmanship +

Compete honestly and to the best of your ability.
Do not engage in cheating, hacking, or exploiting game mechanics.
Show respect to opponents, teammates, and officials, regardless of the match outcome.
Avoid any form of griefing, stalling, or actions designed to undermine the integrity of the competition.

03. Online Etiquette +

Communicate respectfully during games, on social media, and in all VESL-affiliated platforms, including Discord.
Avoid spamming, trolling, or engaging in toxic behavior.
Report inappropriate conduct to VESL staff rather than engaging in disputes publicly.

04. Academic and Personal Responsibility +

Maintain good academic standing to remain eligible for VESL participation, as outlined by your school or organization.
Balance your esports activities with academic and personal responsibilities.
Abide by any additional rules or guidelines set by your school or team.

05. Compliance with Rules +

Follow all VESL tournament rulebooks and event rules, as well as the terms of this Code of Conduct.
Obey the instructions of VESL staff and officials during events.
Familiarize yourself with game-specific rules, procedures, and guidelines.

06. Consequences for Violations +

Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary actions, including but not limited to:

Warnings or reprimands
Match forfeiture
Temporary or permanent bans from VESL events
Notification to parents, school administrators or other relevant authorities

VESL reserves the right to make final decisions regarding disciplinary measures.

07. Reporting Violations +

We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment. To encourage reporting of any violations of the Code of Conduct, we offer the option to report concerns anonymously.

Anonymous Reporting

Participants are encouraged to report any observed violations of this Code of Conduct to VESL staff. Individuals may submit reports without disclosing their identity. Anonymous reports will be treated with the same seriousness and diligence as identified reports.

Confidentiality

Reports should be submitted promptly and include as much detail as possible (e.g., date, time, involved parties, and description of the incident). While anonymity will be respected, please note that the ability to investigate and resolve an issue may be limited without identifying information.

No Retaliation

Retaliation against any individual who reports a violation, whether anonymously or identified, is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.

Your voice matters, and we appreciate your role in maintaining a respectful and safe environment.

08. Agreement +

By participating in VESL activities, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to abide by this Code of Conduct. VESL is committed to ensuring a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Marvel Rivals

These Official Rules (Rules) of the Varsity Esports & STEM League (VESL) apply to each of the teams who have registered and met the requirements for the 2025-2026 school year, as well as their head coach, assistant coaches, vice principals, athletic directors, Starters, Substitutes (collectively Team Members), and other members.

01. Game Rules +

1.1 Definition of Terms

1.1.1 Tournament Administrator: This refers to the governing body of any and all VESL competitions, the Technical Director of VESL, and any other designated person(s) under the employ of VESL.
1.1.2 Game: An instance of competition that is played until a winner is determined by one of the following methods:
- (a) The game ends normally, by way of the objective completion or time expiration where one team has scored more than the other, or
- (b) Team Forfeit.
1.1.3 Match: A “Match” is defined as tournament play between two (2) Teams that may involve multiple Games. The winning team will receive a win in a league format, or if in a tournament format, will advance to the next round.
1.1.4 Phase: A designated portion of the total play that comprises a full season. There are three distinct phases: preseason, regular season, and playoffs.
1.1.5 Season: The span of time over which scheduled league play will occur. The regular season will occur over a period of 6 weeks, playoffs will occur over a period of 2 weeks, and state championships will occur over a period of TBD.
1.1.6 Game of Record: A game of record (“GOR”) in Marvel Rivals is established under any of the following conditions:
- Any attack or ability lands on an enemy hero.
- Line of sight is established between players on opposing teams.
- One (1) minute or more has elapsed.

1.2 Roster Requirements

In order to be eligible to compete in the VESL Marvel Rivals 2025-2026 season, a player must:

(a) Be attending a VESL registered High School and
(b) Be registered on both the VESL website and LeagueOS website.

Academic eligibility must be verified by the teacher liaison or school administrator. Mid-season IGN changes are not permitted without prior approval.

1.2.1 Roster Submission:
- Team members must be eligible to compete on behalf of their school.
- Each team may have a maximum of nine (9) players, broken down into six (6) starting players on the Roster, and three (3) substitutes.
- No individual may simultaneously hold both roles as listed above.
- The Roster must be finalized prior to the Roster Lock Date.
- Players must also keep their Discord name and In Game Name (IGN) the same as when they tried out for the team.
- Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action at the VESL Operations sole discretion.
1.2.2 Substitutions:
- Only the players shown on a team’s Bench before the start of the match can be used as substitutes in an official VESL Match.
- Once a game has started, substitutions are not allowed.
- Once the game is complete with results recorded, player substitutions may be made before the start of the following game.
- If a player on the starting roster cannot compete in the match and there are no available substitutes, competition may continue without that player as long as the team is not more than two players down compared to the opposing team.

1.3 Stoppage of Play

1.3.1 Directed Pause: At any time, League Officials may order the pause of a match at the sole discretion of League Officials.
1.3.2 Player Disconnection:
- If a player disconnects from the online match during a game, a pause will be allowed.
- The disconnected player will have to reconnect back to match within 5 minutes or the game will be unpaused and teams will continue to play with the current players found in the lobby.
- For all disconnects, please provide a screenshot as proof of when the disconnection happens.
- Please note that Marvel Rivals currently only supports reconnecting from a player if the player’s client crashes or their internet is lost. If a player leaves the lobby by the menu, they will NOT be able to rejoin the game in progress.
- If a GOR has been established, the round must continue unless both teams decide to restart the current map.
- If a GOR has not been established, both teams must end the current map by returning to the lobby, allow the disconnected player to rejoin, and then restart the map.
- You MAY NOT fill the spot of a disconnected player with a different player or substitute in the middle of a game.
1.3.3 Team Disconnection:
- If an entire team disconnects from the online match during a game, players that are still in the match will return to the game lobby.
- If a GOR has been established, the map win will go to the team still connected to the game, unless both teams agree otherwise.
- If a GOR has not been established, both teams must reconnect to the lobby, allow the disconnected player to rejoin, and then restart the map.
- The team will have to reconnect back to match within 5 minutes or the game will count as a win for the opposing team despite GOR being established or not.
- The disconnected team must share a message in the match lobby chat to notify the opposing team. If the team cannot reconnect in a timely manner, please immediately notify League Officials.

1.4 Match Process

1.4.1 Pre-Match Setup: Teams must follow the Pre-Match Setup in the league’s Competition Rulebook as they prepare to join their match.
1.4.2 Match Setup: Players are expected to check in at least 20-30 minutes prior to their match on the associated LeagueOS page. Failure to do so may result in a forfeit loss. During check-in, teams should confirm the roster that is playing before the match starts.
1.4.3 Lobby Creation:
- Create Lobby from main menu: Play > Change Mode > Custom Game.
- Choose Tournament Room > Create.
- Change settings to those listed in Section 1.4.6.
- Click on the square pencil icon next to Team A and Team B to set names.
- Above the Start button, click on the map. Select the map for the upcoming game round.
- Invite your teammates and the captain of the opposing team. Move players as needed to proper teams.
- Any coaches or spectators for a team must join a coach slot.
1.4.4 Reset Game: Should a game need to be reset all players must select leave game from the pause menu and return back to the custom game lobby. Players will use the same map and agents that were chosen previously.
1.4.5 Changing Rosters: Roster changes are not allowed once a game has begun unless it is a multi-game series. In this case, substitutions are allowed in between games of a series and should be announced to the other team.

- Game 1: Lower seed vetoes one Domination map. Higher seed chooses.
- Game 2: Winner of Game 1 vetoes one Convergence map. Loser chooses.
- Game 3: Winner of Game 2 vetoes one Convoy map. Loser chooses.
1.4.5 Hero Lock Guidelines:
- Hero Ban-Lock Process: After all 12 players have joined the lobby and the game begins, one player of each team will be randomly designated as team captain. Then, team captains will take turns banning and locking heroes.
- Format: Right ban, Left ban, Left lock, Right lock, Right ban, Left ban, Left lock, Right lock, Right ban, Left ban.
- Hero Selection: All heroes are allowed. New heroes will be unplayable for up to 2 weeks once released unless stated otherwise. Any hero disabled by the publisher is not allowed.
1.4.6 Side Selection: Winner of Map 1 selects sides. EG. Team A wins the first round (Domination), Team B will pick the second round map (Convergence), and Team A will choose if they want to defend or attack. This style of picking continues until the end of the set.

1.5 Match F.A.Q

1.5.1 Spectating: VESL staff may spectate or stream any match. Player POV streams allowed but are at their own risk. Any streams must use a 3-minute delay. Non VESL Players/Staff are NOT permitted to be in game or call during match time for any reason. No spectators other than VESL Staff are permitted to be in neutral observer slots.
1.5.2 In-Game Content Updates: Marvel Rivals is a live-service multiplayer game that may release new content patches with new and/or updated heroes and maps while the season is occurring. Any heroes or maps currently disabled in-game by Net Ease will not be available during official VESL matches. All VESL matches will occur on the most up-to-date patch. Any new heroes and maps will be automatically banned for a two-week period. After this period, the hero/map will become eligible for competition.

02. Player Equipment +

2.1 Equipment

Each player on the Starting Roster must have access to the equipment in the following categories:

PC, PS5, or Xbox X|S
Monitor/Television
Headsets and/or Earbuds and/or Microphones
Table and Chairs
Peripherals for computer (mouse, keyboard) or console (game controller)
Stable Internet/Wifi connection
Computer Specifications

2.2 Supported Equipment

2.2.1 Ximming: The use of a mouse and keyboard on consoles. A XIM device enables console players to circumvent detection, thereby acquiring an unfair competitive advantage through the utilization of unauthorized input methods rather than a controller. Players must compete using either their PC - mouse, keyboard and headset, OR official Playstation / Xbox system - controller and headset, in all VESL games. Ximming is STRICTLY prohibited. Any team found in violation of this rule will receive a forfeit for all matches in which Ximming was used.

2.3 Internet Connection & Latency

Teams are expected but not required to be connected to an internet connection using a wired connection method with their Ethernet Adapter. Using a wireless connection method or internet hotspot can lead to latency issues while competing in an online arena environment.

2.4 Computer Programs and Usage

All macro programs, including software macros and hardware implemented macros stored in on-board memory of the hardware, external to the VALORANT Game clients are prohibited. All cheating software are prohibited. Rawaccel and True Stretch programs are allowed.

03. Post-Match Process +

3.1 Results

3.1.1. Reporting Scores: Players should take screenshots of the match results and enter the results into the LeagueOS match page. In the event of a score reporting error, players must submit a support ticket to VESL Ops. Accuracy is essential; intentional misreporting may lead to penalties.
3.1.2. Tiebreakers & Forfeits: In the event of a tie, the outcome will be determined using the following criteria, in order: total sets won, head-to-head record, and game differential. If a team fails to appear within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time and has not contacted or informed VESL Ops, the match will be considered a forfeit. In the case of technical issues, teams are allowed a pause of up to 10–15 minutes before the match is forfeited or resumed.
3.1.3. Dispute Process: All disputes will be handled privately, not through in-game chats or public discord channels. Public chat disputes may result in penalties to either team. Submit disputes within 30 minutes with evidence to support the claim (i.e. screenshots, recordings, etc). Admin decisions are final.

04. Pauses +

4.1. Technical Pauses Categories

Suspension of Play (Expected delay: Greater than 10 minutes): Examples: player disconnected from game, monitor went black, computer froze for longer than 3 seconds (less time could classify as an equipment check), any programs crashed during gameplay, etc.
Equipment Check (Expected delay: 3-5 minutes): Examples: mouse battery died, peripheral stopped working, audio became bugged, settings suddenly reset, etc.

4.2. Technical Pause Protocol

If a player has a problem that prevents the player from continuing play, the player must notify League Officials and request a technical pause. The player must announce the reason when requesting a technical pause, and VESL Ops will pause the game if the reason is determined to be valid. Players are not allowed to initiate a technical pause in-game on their own. If a player uses the in-game function to initiate a technical pause, the player’s Team may be sanctioned for delay of game.

4.3. Player Emergency Pause

4.3.1. Player Emergency Protocol: Teams will be granted a maximum of one (1) pause for an emergency situation (“Player Emergency Pause”) per map in a Match for a maximum aggregate total of ten (10) minutes across the Match. If a Team requires more than ten (10) minutes of Player Emergency Pauses, then the players using the Player Emergency Pause will become ineligible to continue play and the match must continue without them or choose to forfeit the game.
4.3.2. Illness, Injury: Minor player illness or injury is not an acceptable reason for a Player Emergency Pause. Players may inform League Officials prior to the start of a Match to reserve the right to use the Player Emergency Pause. League Officials may grant a Player Emergency Pause during the Match in order to evaluate the issue and to determine whether the player is ready, willing, and able to continue playing.

05. Exploit Adjudication +

A player-caused bug that has the potential to significantly alter the competitive integrity of the game and provide an unintended competitive advantage. As a standard, regardless of impact, exploit usage is not permitted and if found will result in a penalty, as outlined below.

5.1 Agent Specific Exploits

5.1.1 Blanket Prohibition: Any use of a bug or exploit covered under a blanket prohibition will be considered a violation of these rules.
5.1.2 Cypher: All Cypher cam placements that afford an unfair competitive advantage via abusing map textures and/or geometry to prevent the Cypher cam from being destroyed or seen are considered banned exploits.
5.1.3. General Agent Utility Rule: All uses of agent utility that afford an unfair competitive advantage via abusing map textures and/or geometry to prevent the agent utility from being destroyed or seen are considered banned exploits. SPECIAL EXCEPTIONS: KAY/O's ZERO/POINT ability is intended to be usable outside of map boundaries, and is a special exception regarding these rules.
5.1.4. Agent Character Model Boosting: Players are prohibited from using another agent's character model to boost to a location out of intended jumping range.

5.2. Assessment of Penalties

5.2.1 Impact: What impact did the exploit have on the round and/or outcome of the map.
5.2.2 Intent: How hard is it to use the exploit accidentally? Has the player or Team received penalties for the same exploit in the Past?

5.3. Types of Penalties

5.3.1 Warning: League Officials may issue warnings for a low impact first offense.
5.3.2 Round Loss: League Officials may issue a round loss when an exploit has a significant impact on the outcome of the round.
5.3.3 Map Loss: League Officials may issue a forfeit loss for a map of the Match in egregious cases.
5.3.4 Match Forfeit Loss: League Officials may issue a forfeit loss for a Match when the actions of the Team Personnel has irreversibly undermined the competitive integrity of the Match.

06. Code of Conduct +

6.1 Personal Conduct

6.1.1 Respect and Personal Integrity: All Players must conduct themselves in a way that is at all times consistent with (a) the Code of Conduct in this Section 5 (“Code of Conduct”) and (b) the general principles of personal integrity, honesty, and good sportsmanship. Players must be respectful of other Players, Tournament Administrators, observers, spectators, and sponsors (as applicable).
6.1.2 Toxic Behavior: Players shall not behave in a manner (a) which violates these Rules, (b) which is disruptive, unsafe or destructive, or (c) which is otherwise harmful to the enjoyment of Marvel Rivals by other users as intended by NetEase Games. In particular, Players shall not engage in harassing or disrespectful conduct, use of abusive or offensive language, Game sabotage, spamming, social engineering, scamming, or any unlawful activity (“Toxic Behavior”).
6.1.3 Impersonation or Glorification of Cheating: Players shall not (a) proclaim to be, or represent themselves as, a banned Player or a cheater/rule breaker, or (b) glorify or otherwise endorse the breaking or violation of these Rules. **Any violation of these Rules may expose a Player or an entire Team to disciplinary action, whether or not that violation was committed intentionally.

6.2 Competitive Integrity

Each Player is expected to play within the spirit of Marvel Rivals and these Rules at all times during any Game or Match. Any form of unfair play is prohibited by these Rules: and may result in disciplinary action. Examples of unfair play include:

Collusion, Match fixing or throwing, bribing a referee or Match official.
Hacking or otherwise modifying the intended behavior of the Marvel Rivals game client.
Playing or allowing another Player to play on an account registered in another person’s name.
Using any kind of cheating device, Intentionally exploiting any game function.
Using distributed denial of service attacks, Using macro keys.
Accepting any gift or bribe, Interfering with the operation of the Tournament.
Making any modification to Valorant that has not been disclosed.
Using any Tournament facilities to post prohibited communications.
Disconnecting from the in-game lobby before being dismissed.

5.3 Harassment

Players are prohibited from engaging in any form of harassing, abusive, or discriminatory conduct, including any of the foregoing based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other status or characteristic protected under applicable law.

5.4 Confidentiality

A Player may not disclose to any third party any confidential information the Player obtains in connection with the Event, including by posting on social media channels.

5.5 Illegal Conduct

Players are required to comply with all applicable laws at all times. Any attempt to deliberately damage or undermine the legitimate operation of the Event may be in violation of criminal and civil laws and will result in disqualification from participation in the Event. If an attempt is made, Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL reserves the right to seek remedies and damages (including attorneys’ fees) to the fullest extent of the law, including criminal prosecution.

06. Publicity, Interview Consent +

6.1 Image and Likeness

By participating in the league you are giving Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL the rights to use your name, tag, likeness, image, voice, gameplay statistics, and/or VESL ID or other biographical information, for publicity purposes before, during, and after the Event, in any manner and media, throughout the world, in perpetuity, but only in connection with publicizing the Event or other events and programming, without any compensation or prior review.

6.2 Interviews

If you are given an opportunity to participate in an interview in connection with the Event (i.e., an “Interview”), you consent to be recorded for the Interview, and you hereby grant to Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL a royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to grant sublicenses) to use your statements and any audio/video footage from the Interview, as well as your name, tag, likeness, image, voice, gameplay statistics, VESL ID, and other biographical information (collectively, “Interview Materials”) in connection with the Interview. Your participation in an Interview is voluntary, and you are not entitled to compensation for an Interview or this license. VESL has no obligation to interview you or use Interview Materials. You can withdraw this license at any time by contacting VESL Operations, however this will not affect any uses VESL has made of such license before the withdrawal.

Valorant

01. Game Rules +

1.1 Definition of Terms

1.1.1 Tournament Administrator: This refers to the governing body of any and all VESL competitions, the Technical Director of VESL, and any other designated person(s) under the employ of VESL.
1.1.2 Game: An instance of competition that is played until a winner is determined by one of the following methods:
- (a) The game ends normally, when a the first team hits 13 rounds won, when a team wins by 2 rounds in overtime or,
- (b) Team Forfeit.
1.1.3 Match: A “Match” is defined as tournament play between two (2) Teams that may involve multiple Games. The winning team will receive a win in a league format, or if in a tournament format, will advance to the next round.
1.1.4 Phase: A designated portion of the total play that comprises a full season. There are three distinct phases: preseason, regular season, and playoffs.
1.1.5 Season: The span of time over which scheduled league play will occur. The regular season will occur over a period of 6 weeks, playoffs will occur over a period of 2 weeks, and state championships will occur over a period of TBD.
1.1.6 Game of Record: A game of record (“GOR”) in Valorant is established under any of the following conditions: The first pre-round timer ends and the barriers drop.

1.2 Roster Requirements

In order to be eligible to compete in the VESL Valorant 2025-2026 season, a player must (a) Be attending a VESL registered High School and (b) Be registered on both the VESL website and LeagueOS website. Academic eligibility must be verified by the teacher liaison or school administrator. Mid-season IGN changes are not permitted without prior approval.

1.2.1 Roster Submission: Team members must be eligible to compete on behalf of their school. In Valorant, each team may have a maximum of eight (8) players, broken down into five (5) starting players on the Roster, and three (3) substitutes. No individual may simultaneously hold both roles as listed above. The Roster must be finalized prior to the Roster Lock Date. Players must also keep their Discord name and In Game Name (IGN) the same as when they tried out for the team. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action at VESL Operations sole discretion.
1.2.2 Substitutions: Only the players shown on a team’s Bench before the start of the match can be used as substitutes in an official VESL Match. Once a game has started, substitutions are not allowed. Once the game is complete with results recorded, player substitutions may be made before the start of the following game. If a player on the starting roster cannot compete in the match and there are no available substitutes, competition may continue without that player as long as the team is not more than two players down compared to the opposing team.

1.3 Stoppage of Play

1.3.1 Directed Pause: At any time, League Officials may order the pause of a match at the sole discretion of League Officials.
1.3.2 Player Disconnection: If a player disconnects from the online match during a game, the current round MUST be played out before a pause can be initiated. Once the barrier has dropped, the game will not be allowed to be paused until the following round. If the disconnected player can return within the 10-minute window, the game must be recreated to the state at which the disconnect occurred, including the stock count. The lobby must be set up once more with the same fighters and stage selected, and once in-game, players can jump from the stage to reduce their stock count, if necessary (damage percentage will not be reset). Once the game is reset, the match should continue. If the disconnected player, or their coach / teacher for the team, has not shared any updates in match lobby chat within the 10-minute window, notify League Ops immediately for further assistance.

1.4 Match Process

1.4.1 Pre-Match Setup: Teams must follow the Pre-Match Setup in the league’s Competition Rulebook as they prepare to join their match.
1.4.2 Match Setup: Players are expected to check in at least 20-30 minutes prior to their match on the associated LeagueOS page. Failure to do so may result in a forfeit loss. During check-in, teams should confirm the roster that is playing before the match starts.
1.4.3 Lobby Creation:
- Home team: Either add a player/captain from the opposing team or create a lobby and enable the lobby code from the top of the screen.
- Away Team: Input the lobby code from the top of the screen and invite the rest of your team if they aren’t in the lobby.
- Server Selection: will by default be NA East - Georgia. If this server creates a disadvantage, teams can agree on a different server.
- Make sure lobby settings match section 1.4.6 then begin the ban process in section 1.4.7.
1.4.4 Reset Game: Should a game need to be reset all players must leave select leave game from the pause menu and return back to the custom game lobby. Players will use the same map and agents that were chosen previously.
1.4.5 Changing Rosters: Roster changes are not allowed once a game has begun unless it is a multi-game series. In this case, substitutions are allowed in between games of a series and should be announced to the other team.

1.5 Match F.A.Q.

1.5.1 Spectating: VESL staff may spectate or stream any match. Player POV streams allowed but are at their own risk. Any streams must use a 3-minute delay. Non VESL Players/Staff are NOT permitted to be in game or call during match time for any reason. No spectators other than VESL Staff are permitted to be in neutral observer slots.
1.5.2 In-Game Content Updates: Valorant is a live-service multiplayer game that may release new content patches with new and/or updated agents and maps while the season is occurring. Any weapons, maps, and/or agents currently disabled in-game by Riot will not be available during official VESL matches. All VESL matches will occur on the most up-to-date patch. Any new agents will be automatically banned for a two-week period. After this period, the agent will become eligible for competition.

1.6 Special Rules

1.6.1 Game Restart Protocol: In the event a Game Restart is necessary, notify an admin first. Both teams should leave the lobby and recreate the match in a state that accurately reflects the score and remaining game time as when the pause/disconnect occurred. The map and agents that were previously chosen will remain the same and if a team does otherwise it will be an immediate forfeit.

02. Player Equipment +

2.1 Equipment

Each player on the Starting Roster must have access to the equipment in the following categories: PC, Headsets and/or Earbuds, Mouse & Keyboard, Valorant game, Computer Specifications (for PC).

2.2 Supported Equipment and Programs

Players must compete using an official Windows system in all VESL games. Any OS such as Linux, Arch Linux, etc. are not allowed. Any team found in violation of this rule will receive a forfeit for all matches in which this rule was violated. All macro programs, including software macros and hardware implemented macros stored in on-board memory of the hardware, external to the VALORANT Game clients are prohibited. All cheating softwares are prohibited. Rawaccel and True Stretch programs are allowed.

03. Post-Match Process +

3.1 Results

3.1.1. Reporting Scores: LeagueOS API should automatically grab results from the match and verify them. In the event this does not happen, players will need to submit results on their own. Players should take screenshots of the match results and enter the results into the LeagueOS match page. In the event of a score reporting error, players must submit a support ticket to VESL Ops. Accuracy is essential; intentional misreporting may lead to penalties.
3.1.2. Tiebreakers & Forfeits: In the event of a tie, the outcome will be determined using the following criteria, in order: total sets won, head-to-head record, and game differential. If a team fails to appear within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time and has not contacted or informed VESL Ops, the match will be considered a forfeit. In the case of technical issues, teams are allowed a pause of up to 10–15 minutes before the match is forfeited or resumed.
3.1.3. Dispute Process: All disputes will be handled privately, not through in-game chats or public discord channels. Public chat disputes may result in penalties to either team. Submit disputes within 30 minutes with evidence to support the claim (i.e. screenshots, recordings, etc). Admin decisions are final.

04. Timeouts & Pauses +

Teams are allowed to call timeouts of sixty (60) seconds in duration (“Timeouts”) two times per map during the first 24 rounds of the map (“Regulation”), at any time not limited by half. The sixty second clock will begin when both Teams’ Match Coaches are connected and able to communicate with their players. In the event of overtime, each team will be granted one Timeout to use for overtime. Unused Timeouts from Regulation will not carry over to overtime.

4.1. Technical Pauses Categories

Suspension of Play (Expected delay: Greater than 10 minutes): Examples: player disconnected from game, monitor went black, computer froze for longer than 3 seconds (less time could classify as an equipment check), any programs crashed during gameplay, etc.
Equipment Check (Expected delay: 3-5 minutes): Examples: mouse battery died, peripheral stopped working, audio became bugged, settings suddenly reset, etc.

4.2. Technical Pause Protocol

If a player has a problem that prevents the player from continuing play, a pause can be initiated pre-round. The player must announce the reason when initiating a technical pause. If the reasoning is not sufficient, the initiating team can be penalized for delay of game. Players are not allowed to initiate a technical pause in-game on their own if an official is present.

4.2.1. Technical Pause Agent Control: During a technical pause, headsets have to stay on and players are prohibited from controlling their agent (i.e., players can not move or use utility during a Timeout). Any form of communication including but not limited to text and voice communication between players and coaches is forbidden during a technical pause, unless instructed to do so by a League Official.

4.3. Player Emergency Pause

4.3.1. Player Emergency Protocol: Teams will be granted a maximum of one (1) pause for an emergency situation (“Player Emergency Pause”) per map in a Match for a maximum aggregate total of ten (10) minutes across the Match. If a Team requires more than ten (10) minutes of Player Emergency Pauses, then the players using the Player Emergency Pause will become ineligible to continue play and the match must continue without them or choose to forfeit the game.
4.3.2. Illness, Injury: Minor player illness or injury is not an acceptable reason for a Player Emergency Pause. Players may inform League Officials prior to the start of a Match to reserve the right to use the Player Emergency Pause. League Officials may grant a Player Emergency Pause during the Match in order to evaluate the issue and to determine whether the player is ready, willing, and able to continue playing.

These Official Rules (“Rules”) of the Varsity Esports & STEM League (VESL) apply to each of the teams who have registered and met the requirements for the 2025-2026 season, as well as their head coach, assistant coaches, vice principals, athletic directors, Starters, and other members.

- The game timer either passes one minute or the first goal has been scored, whichever occurs first.
- Once GOR is established, game restarts are only allowed under limited conditions such as, game time has not passed one minute of play or no one has scored.

1.2 Roster Requirements

In order to be eligible to compete in the VESL Rocket League 2025-2026 season, a player must:

(a) Be attending a VESL registered High School and
(b) Be registered on both the VESL website and LeagueOS website.

- If this happens, submit a ticket to VESL staff immediately for further assistance.

Any cars or items currently disabled in-game by Psyonix will not be available during official VESL matches. All VESL matches will occur on the most up-to-date patch, and any available agents, maps, and weapons are eligible for use in VESL matches unless otherwise stated by League Officials.

1.6 Special Rules

1.6.1 Game Restart Protocol: In the event a Game Restart is necessary, notify an admin first. Both teams should leave the lobby and recreate the match in a state that accurately reflects the score and remaining game time as when the pause/disconnect occurred. If a Game Restart is needed to replay an Overtime scenario, the game will be played until a single goal is scored. The team that scores will be awarded the win for the game.

02. Player Equipment +

2.1 Equipment

Each player on the Starting Roster must:

(a) be able to provide their own or
(b) have access to equipment in the following categories: PC or Compatible Gaming Console, Headsets and/or Earbuds, Compatible controller, or Mouse & Keyboard (for PC), Rocket League game, Computer Specifications (for PC).

Note: PC’s & Monitors will be provided for LAN events and substitutions will not be allowed. Players are welcome to bring their own headsets, earbuds, microphone, mouse and/or keyboards.

2.2 Supported Equipment and Programs

Players must compete using an official console or PC. Any OS designed to get around Rocket League anti-cheat is prohibited. All macro programs, including software macros and hardware implemented macros stored in on-board memory of the hardware, external to the Rocket League Game clients are prohibited. All cheating softwares are prohibited. Bakkesmod is allowed.

03. Post Match Process +

3.1 Results

3.1.1 Reporting Scores: Matches completed using the LeagueOS API integration should have a replay file uploaded into the match proof section. In the event that the results are not automatically recorded, or are recorded incorrectly, then statistics will not be tracked, and the match results would need to be submitted manually within 1 hour of match completion. Players should take screenshots of the match results and enter the results into the LeagueOS match page. In the event of a score reporting error, players must submit a support ticket to VESL Ops.
3.1.2. Tiebreakers & Forfeits: In the event of a tie, the outcome will be determined using the following criteria, in order: total sets won, head-to-head record, and game differential. If a team fails to appear within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time and has not contacted or informed VESL Ops, the match will be considered a forfeit. In the case of technical issues, teams are allowed a pause of up to 10–15 minutes before the match is forfeited or resumed.
3.1.3. Dispute Process: Notify admin immediately and continue playing. Do not stop play unless directed by match official. All disputes will be handled privately, not through in-game chats or public discord channels. Public chat disputes may result in penalties to either team. Submit disputes within 30 minutes with evidence to support the claim (i.e. screenshots, recordings, etc). Admin decisions are final.

04. Timeouts and Pauses +

Players are NOT permitted to use the Match admin feature for any circumstance. Failure to follow this rule can result in game or match forfeiture and removal from the season if abused.

4.1. Technical Pauses Categories

Suspension of Play (Expected delay: Greater than 10 minutes): Examples: player disconnected from game, monitor went black, computer froze for longer than 3 seconds (less time could classify as an equipment check), any programs crashed during gameplay, etc.
Equipment Check (Expected delay: 3-5 minutes): Examples: mouse battery died, peripheral stopped working, audio became bugged, settings suddenly reset, etc.

4.3. Player Emergency Pause

4.3.1. Player Emergency Protocol: Teams will be granted a maximum of one (1) pause for an emergency situation (“Player Emergency Pause”) per map in a Match for a maximum aggregate total of 10 minutes across the Match. If a Team requires more than ten (10) minutes of Player Emergency Pauses, then the players using the Player Emergency Pause will become ineligible to continue play and must be substituted.
4.3.2. Illness, Injury: Minor player illness or injury is not an acceptable reason for a Player Emergency Pause. Players may inform League Officials prior to the start of a Match to reserve the right to use the Player Emergency Pause. League Officials may grant a Player Emergency Pause during the Match in order to evaluate the issue and to determine whether the player is ready, willing, and able to continue playing.

05. Code of Conduct +

5.1 Personal Conduct

5.1.1 Respect and Personal Integrity: All Players must conduct themselves in a way that is at all times consistent with (a) the Code of Conduct in this Section 10 (“Code of Conduct”) and (b) the general principles of personal integrity, honesty, and good sportsmanship. Players must be respectful of other Players, Tournament Administrators, observers, spectators, and sponsors (as applicable).
5.1.2 Toxic Behavior: Players shall not behave in a manner (a) which violates these Rules, (b) which is disruptive, unsafe or destructive, or (c) which is otherwise harmful to the enjoyment of Rocket League by other users as intended by Psyonix (as decided by Psyonix). In particular, Players shall not engage in harassing or disrespectful conduct, use of abusive or offensive language, Game sabotage, spamming, social engineering, scamming, or any unlawful activity (“Toxic Behavior”).
5.1.3 Impersonation or Glorification of Cheating: Players shall not (a) proclaim to be, or represent themselves as, a banned Player or a cheater/rule breaker, or (b) glorify or otherwise endorse the breaking or violation of these Rules. **Any violation of these Rules may expose a Player or an entire Team to disciplinary action, whether or not that violation was committed intentionally.

5.2 Competitive Integrity

Each Player is expected to play within the spirit of sportsmanship at all times during any Game or Match. Any form of unfair play is prohibited by these Rules, and may result in disciplinary action. Examples of unfair play include the following: Collusion, match fixing or throwing, bribing a referee or Match official, Hacking or otherwise modifying the intended behavior of the Rocket League game client, Playing or allowing another Player to play on an Epic Account registered in another person’s name, Using any kind of cheating device, Intentionally exploiting any game function, Using distributed denial of service attacks, Using macro keys, Accepting any gift, reward, bribe, Interfering with the operation of the Tournament, Making any modification to Rocket League that has not been disclosed to and authorized by the Tournament Administrators, Using any Tournament facilities to post prohibited communications, Disconnecting from the in-game lobby before being dismissed by Tournament Administrators. Otherwise violating these Rules.

5.3 Harassment

Players are prohibited from engaging in any form of harassing, abusive, or discriminatory conduct, including any of the foregoing based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other status or characteristic protected under applicable law.

5.4 Confidentiality

A Player may not disclose to any third party any confidential information the Player obtains in connection with the Event, including by posting on social media channels.

5.5 Illegal Conduct

Players are required to comply with all applicable laws at all times. Any attempt to deliberately damage or undermine the legitimate operation of the Event may be in violation of criminal and civil laws and will result in disqualification from participation in the Event. If an attempt is made, Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL reserves the right to seek remedies and damages (including attorneys’ fees) to the fullest extent of the law, including criminal prosecution.

06. Publicity, Interview Consent +

6.1 Image and Likeness

By participating in the league you are giving Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL the rights to use your name, tag, likeness, image, voice, gameplay statistics, and/or VESL ID or other biographical information, for publicity purposes before, during, and after the Event, in any manner and media, throughout the world, in perpetuity, but only in connection with publicizing the Event or other events and programming, without any compensation or prior review.

6.2 Interviews

If you are given an opportunity to participate in an interview in connection with the Event (i.e., an “Interview”), you consent to be recorded for the Interview, and you hereby grant to Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL a royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to grant sublicenses) to use your statements and any audio/video footage from the Interview, as well as your name, tag, likeness, image, voice, gameplay statistics, VESL ID, and other biographical information (collectively, “Interview Materials”) in connection with the Interview. Your participation in an Interview is voluntary, and you are not entitled to compensation for an Interview or this license. VESL has no obligation to interview you or use Interview Materials. You can withdraw this license at any time by contacting VESL Operations, however this will not affect any uses VESL has made of such license before the withdrawal.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

These Official Rules (“Rules”) of the Varsity Esports and STEM League (“VESL”) apply to each of the teams who have registered and met the requirements for the 2025-2026 school year, as well as any unofficial and official coaching staff, vice principals, athletic directors, Starters, Substitutes (collectively “Team Members”), and other members.

01. Game Rules +

1.1 Definition of Terms

1.1.1 Game: An instance of competition that is played until a winner is determined by one of the following methods, whichever occurs first:
- (a) completion of the countdown timer or objective achieved,
- (b) Team Surrender, or
- (c) Team Forfeit.
1.1.2 Set: A series of games that is played until one player wins a majority of the total games (e.g., winning two games out of three “best-of-three”). The winning player will receive a win tally in favor of their team for the match.
1.1.3 Match: A group of sets that is played until one team wins a majority of the total sets (e.g., winning two sets out of three “best-of-three”). The winning team will either receive a win tally in a league format or advance to the next round in a tournament format.
1.1.4 League: A group of teams that regularly play against one another. There are two distinct types of VESL leagues:
- (a) Recreational and
- (b) Competitive.
1.1.5 Phase: A section of scheduled league play that comprises a season. There are distinct phases for leagues, with each phase having its own league format.
1.1.6 Season: Scheduled league play that will occur over a predetermined amount of time.
1.1.7 Game of Record: A Game of Record (GOR) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is established under the following conditions:
- Game timer reaches the end of the countdown and states “GO”.
- Once GOR is established, game restarts will only be allowed under limited conditions, at the discretion of League Ops.

1.2 Roster Requirements

In order to be eligible to compete in the VESL Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) 2025-2026 season, a player must:

(a) Be attending a VESL registered High School and
(b) Be registered on both the VESL website and LeagueOS website.

Academic eligibility must be verified by the teacher liaison or school administrator. Mid-season IGN changes are not permitted without prior approval.

1.2.1 Roster Submission:
- Team members must be eligible to compete on behalf of their school.
- In SSBU, each team may have a maximum of five (5) players, broken down into three (3) starting players on the Roster, and two (2) substitutes.
- No individual may simultaneously hold both roles as listed above.
- The Roster must be finalized prior to the Roster Lock Date.
- Players must also keep their Discord name and In Game Name (IGN) the same as when they tried out for the team.
- Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action at VESL Operations sole discretion.
- Players that change their IGNs mid-season will also be subject to such penalties until they notify VESL Ops about the name change, or they change their name back.
1.2.2 Substitutions:
- Only the players shown on a team’s Bench before the start of the match can be used as substitutes in an official VESL Match.
- Once a game has started, substitutions are not allowed.
- Once the game is complete with results recorded, player substitutions may be made before the start of the following game.
- If a player on the starting roster cannot compete in the match and there are no available substitutes, competition may continue without that player as long as the team is not more than two players down compared to the opposing team.

1.3 Stoppage of Play

1.3.1 Directed Pause: At any time, League Officials may order the pause of a match at the sole discretion of League Officials.
1.3.2 Player Disconnection:
- If a player disconnects from the online match during a game, the arena lobby will close.
- The disconnected player must indicate the reason for the disconnection in the match lobby chat within 10 minutes or risk a loss for the set.
- Please provide a screenshot for all disconnects as proof of when the disconnection happens.
- If the disconnected player can return within the 10-minute window, the game must be recreated to the state at which the disconnect occurred, including the stock count.
- If the disconnected player, or their coach / teacher for the team, has not shared any updates in match lobby chat within the 10-minute window, notify League Ops immediately for further assistance.
1.3.3 Latency Issues:
- In the event of latency issues, competitors should notify League Ops before damage has occurred.
- If the latency issues are noticed during a game where damage has already occurred, competitors MUST finish the current game.
- League Ops will perform a SableDetect test to determine the playability of the connection and attempt to troubleshoot any issues.
- League Ops has full discretion and final authority to determine the playability of a match.
- If a competitor’s connection is determined to be negatively impacting the match, League Ops reserves the right to forfeit a match at any time.

1.4 Match Process

1.4.1 Pre-Match Setup: Teams must follow the Pre-Match Setup in the league’s Competition Rulebook as they prepare to join their match.
1.4.2 Game-Set-Match Flow:
1. Each roster has a total of 9 stocks (3 per player) per set. Upon depletion of those 9 stocks, the set will end and the match will move on to the next set (or finish if a roster has won 2 sets).
2. Prior to starting a set and stage picks/bans, rosters must declare in match chat the player that will begin the set. Use the format of "Player 1 - 'gamertag'" when declaring.
3. Rosters will then proceed with the stage selection process (see 1.4 Stage Veto).
4. Once a stage for the set is chosen, the home team will create the lobby (see 1.3 Game Lobby) and the players from each roster who were declared as "Player 1" will face off in a 3-stock game. The game ends once a player has lost all 3 of their stocks.
5. The winning player plays against the opposing roster's next player (can be any player on the roster that has not been eliminated) in a new game, using the same character they (the winning player) played with in the previous game.
6. At the start of the new game, the returning player must self-destruct (SD) until their starting stocks are equal to the number of remaining stocks they had at the end of the previous game. In the instance the returning player self-destructs too many times, the outcome will stand.
7. Note: it is highly encouraged that screenshots are taken every time a game ends, to ensure accuracy. This will also assist tournament admins in any potential match disputes.
8. The game will officially begin once invincibility wears off, both players are in starting positions, and both players have used a taunt emote to indicate they are ready to proceed. The game will end once a player has lost all of their stocks.
9. Repeat steps 4 - 6 until one roster has had 3 players lose all 3 of their individual stocks (9 total). The roster with remaining stocks wins the set.
10. Repeat steps 1 - 7 until a roster has won 2 sets. This roster will be declared the match winner.
1.4.3 Match Setup: Create Lobby.
- Home team: From the main menu, select Online > Smash > Battle Arena > Create Arena. Set up the Arena with the Settings found in 5.3.2 Match Format. Set an Arena Password and share that with the Unique Arena ID in Match Lobby Chat.
- Away Team: From the Main Menu, select Online > Smash > Battle Arena > Join Arena. Enter the Arena ID and Password provided by the Home Team.
- It is recommended (but not required) that the lobby host for Game 1 remains the host for the entire set. See section 2 "Best Practices" for more information.
1.4.4 Set & Game Setup:
- Individual (1v1): Follow stage strike section (Section 1.6.1) until the best of 3 or 5 is complete.
- Crew Battle (3v3): Follow stage strike section (Section 1.6.1) until one roster loses all of their stocks.

1.4.6 Stage Selection: The stage selection procedure is as follows and is done throughout the match:
- Set 1: Home Team bans 2 stages from 1.3.7 Starter Stages. Away Team bans 2 stages from 1.3.7 Starter Stages. The remaining stage will be played for Set 1.
- Set 2: Winning roster bans 2 Starter Stages and 1 Counterpick Stage (Section 1.3.8). Losing roster picks the stage (from either Starter or Counterpick) for Set 2.
- Set 3 and beyond (if applicable): Repeat steps 1 & 2 for subsequent sets, as needed to determine a match winner.

1.5 Match F.A.Q

1.5.1 Spectating: As spectators may cause network latency issues for players, spectators are not allowed to use the in-game spectating tools during VESL matches. The only non-player spectator allowed in the lobby will be the esports coordinator recording / officiating the match to avoid latency issues or throttling the lobby’s bandwidth.
1.5.2 In-Game Content Updates: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a live-service multiplayer game that may release new content patches with new and/or updated fighters and stages during the season. Any fighters or stages currently disabled in-game by Nintendo will not be available for use during official VESL matches. All VESL matches will occur on the most up-to-date patch, and any available fighters or stages listed in section 1.6 are eligible for use in VESL matches unless otherwise stated by League Officials.

1.6 Special Rules

1.6.1 Mii™ Fighters:
- Mii™ Fighters must use their default costumes (though players may select any color for their Mii™) and must use a Guest Mii™.
- Any player who declares their intention to compete using a Mii™ Fighter must communicate their Mii™ Fighter Setup in match lobby chat so that their opponents are aware of the move selection before going into game.
- Mii™ Fighters should be named after the combination of special moves chosen, listed in the format “XXXX.” Each X is a number between 1 - 3 which will designate the special ability chosen in each slot from top to bottom when assigning special abilities to the Mii™ Fighter.
- Example: Player A chooses “Mii™ Fighter - Brawler”. Player A chooses the following Special Abilities from Top to Bottom: Neutral Special: 1 Shot Put, Side Special: 2 Burning Dropkick, Up Special: 1 Soaring Axe Kick, Down Special: 3 Counter Throw. Mii™ Fighter’s Name should then be set to: 1213.
- This will allow the opponent to know what moveset to expect from that Mii™ Fighter when facing them. Player A communicates in Match Lobby Chat that he is using a 1213 move set spread so that their opponent is aware.
- Music must be set to 0 for streamed matches (copyright compliance).
- Any combination of moves may be used, but any movesets that any player may want to use during a set must be created before the set begins (up to a limit of three Mii™ Fighters).
1.6.2 Amiibo™: All Amiibo™ figures are prohibited from use in official matches.
1.6.3 Sudden Death:
- If a game enters the in-game Sudden Death mode at any point, the results will not count.
- The remaining stocks and damage percentage determine the winner at the moment Sudden Death occurs.
- The player with the higher stock count is the winner.
- If both Players are tied in stocks, the player with the lower damage percentage is the winner.
- If percentage/stocks are tied, players will play a 1-stock/2-minute match.

02. Player Equipment +

Each player on the Starting Roster must have access to the equipment in the following categories:

2.2 Supported Equipment

Players must compete using an official Nintendo Switch system in all VESL games. PC or laptop and tablet use are not permitted. Any team found in violation of this rule will receive a forfeit for all matches in which PCs, laptops, or tablets were used.

2.3 Internet Connection & Latency

Teams are expected but not required to be connected to an internet connection using a wired connection method with their Nintendo USB to Ethernet Adapter. Using a wireless connection method or internet hotspot can lead to latency issues while competing in an online arena environment. If latency issues exist during a match and a team is found to be using a wireless connection method, League Officials may require a restart, reschedule, or issue a loss for the game, set, or match.

03. Post-Match Process +

Playing or allowing another Player to play on a Nintendo Online Account registered in another person’s name (or soliciting, encouraging, or directing someone else to do so).
Using any kind of cheating device, program, or similar cheating method to gain a competitive advantage.
Intentionally exploiting any game function (e.g., an in-game bug or glitch) in a manner not intended by Nintendo in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Accepting any gift, reward, bribe, or compensation for services promised, rendered, or to be rendered in connection with unfair play of Super Smash Bros Ultimate (e.g., services designed to throw or fix a Match or Session).
Interfering with the operation of the Tournament, the Rules Website, or any website owned or operated by Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc., VESL or the Tournament Administrators.
Making any modification to Super Smash Bros Ultimate that has not been disclosed to and authorized by the Tournament Administrators.
Using any Tournament facilities, services, or equipment provided or made available by the Tournament Entities to post, transmit, disseminate, or otherwise make available any communications prohibited by the Code of Conduct.
Disconnecting from the in-game lobby before being dismissed by Tournament Administrators.
Otherwise violating these Rules.

- Once GOR is established, game restarts will only be allowed under limited conditions, at the discretion of League Ops.

1.2 Roster Requirements

In order to be eligible to compete in the VESL NBA 2K26 2025-2026 season, a player must:

(a) Be attending a VESL registered High School and
(b) Be registered on both the VESL website and LeagueOS website.

Academic eligibility must be verified by the teacher liaison or school administrator. Mid-season IGN changes are not permitted without prior approval.

1.2.1 Roster Submission:
- Team members must be eligible to compete on behalf of their school.
- In NBA 2K26, each team may have a maximum of two (2) players, broken down into one (1) starting player on the Roster, and one (1) substitute.
- No individual may simultaneously hold both roles as listed above.
- The Roster must be finalized prior to the Roster Lock Date.
- Players must also keep their Discord name and In Game Name (IGN) the same as when they tried out for the team.
- Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action at the Tournament Administrator’s sole discretion.
- Players that change their IGNs mid-season will also be subject to such penalties until they notify the Tournament Administrator about the name change, or they change their name back.
1.2.2 Substitutions:
- Only the players shown on a team’s Bench before the start of the match can be used as substitutes in an official VESL Match.
- Once a game has started, substitutions are not allowed.
- Once the game is complete with results recorded, player substitutions may be made before the start of the following game.
- If a player on the starting roster cannot compete in the match and there are no available substitutes, competition may continue without that player as long as the team is not more than two players down compared to the opposing team.

1.3 Stoppage of Play

1.3.1 Directed Pause: At any time, League Officials may order the pause of a match at the sole discretion of League Officials.
1.3.2 Game Disconnection:
- If a player disconnects from the online match, the game will have to be replayed.
- The current score and time remaining will stand and have to be factored into the new match.
- Ex: If a player disconnects at the end of the first quarter at 7-0 – the next game will only play up to three quarters and the score from the first game will be added to the second game.
- In the event of excessive disconnects, players will have to complete a network stability test to determine the winner.

1.4 Match Process

1.4.1 Pre-Match Setup: Teams must follow the Pre-Match Setup in the league’s Competition Rulebook as they prepare to join their match.
1.4.2 Match Setup: Players are expected to check in at least 20-30 minutes prior to their match on the associated LeagueOS page. Failure to do so may result in a forfeit loss. During check-in, teams should confirm the roster that is playing before the match starts.
1.4.3 Lobby Creation: The HOME TEAM will setup the lobby.
- Start NBA 2K26 and navigate to PLAY NOW.
- Select Quick Play and press Triangle / Y to "Play with Friends".
- Same Console: Invite via console friend list.
- Crossplay: Open menu (L1+R1 on PS5, LB+RB on Xbox) to invite.
- Optional: Load Injury-Free Rosters if needed using the Load Rosters feature.
- Change Settings according to section 1.4.6.
1.4.4 Reset Game: Should a game need to be reset all players must select leave game from the pause menu and return back to the custom game lobby. Players will use the same teams that were chosen previously.
1.4.5 Changing Rosters: Roster changes are not allowed once a game has begun unless it is a multi-game series. In this case, substitutions are allowed in between games of a series and should be announced to the other team.

1.5 Match F.A.Q.

1.5.1 Spectating: VESL staff may spectate or stream any match. Player POV streams allowed but are at their own risk. Any streams must use a 3-minute delay. Non VESL Players/Staff are NOT permitted to be in game or call during match time for any reason.
1.5.2 Disconnections: In the event of a player disconnected, the match needs to be remade, continuing with the same score how much time was left in the game if 1 minute has passed

02. Player Equipment +

2.1 Equipment
Each player on the Starting Roster must be able to provide their own equipment in the following categories:

2.1.1 Programs and Usage

All macro programs, including software macros and hardware implemented macros stored in on-board memory of the hardware are prohibited.

All cheating softwares are prohibited.

All physical cheating devices such as Zen, Xim or any similar devices are strictly prohibited.

03. Post-Match Process +

3.1 Results
Teams are encouraged to record their own screenshots of results in case of disputes.

3.1.1. Reporting Scores: Players should take screenshots of the match results and enter the results into the LeagueOS match page. In the event of a score reporting error, players must submit a support ticket to VESL Ops. Accuracy is essential; intentional misreporting may lead to penalties.

3.1.2. Tiebreakers & Forfeits: In the event of a tie, the outcome will be determined using the following criteria, in order: total sets won, head-to-head record, and game differential. If a team fails to appear within 10 minutes of the scheduled start time and has not contacted or informed VESL Ops, the match will be considered a forfeit. In the case of technical issues, teams are allowed a pause of up to 10–15 minutes before the match is forfeited or resumed.

3.1.3. Dispute Process: All disputes will be handled privately, not through in-game chats or public discord channels. Public chat disputes may result in penalties to either team. Submit disputes within 30 minutes with evidence to support the claim (i.e. screenshots, recordings, etc). Admin decisions are final.

04. Timeouts and Pauses +

Teams are allowed to use all timeouts given in NBA 2K26.

4.1. Technical Pauses Categories

Suspension of Play (Expected delay: Greater than 10 minutes): Examples: player disconnected from game, monitor went black, computer froze for longer than 3 seconds (less time could classify as an equipment check), any programs crashed during gameplay, etc.

Equipment Check (Expected delay: 3-5 minutes): Examples: mouse/controller battery died, peripheral stopped working, audio became bugged, settings suddenly reset, etc.

4.3. Player Emergency Pause

4.3.1. Player Emergency Protocol: Teams will be granted a maximum of one (1) pause for an emergency situation (“Player Emergency Pause”) per map in a Match for a maximum aggregate total of 10 minutes across the Match. If a Team requires more than ten (10) minutes of Player Emergency Pauses, then the players using the Player Emergency Pause will become ineligible to continue play and the match must continue or choose to forfeit the game.

4.3.2. Illness, Injury: Minor player illness or injury is not an acceptable reason for a Player Emergency Pause. Players may inform League Officials prior to the start of a Match to reserve the right to use the Player Emergency Pause. League Officials may grant a Player Emergency Pause during the Match in order to evaluate the issue and to determine whether the player is ready, willing, and able to continue playing.

05. Code of Conduct +

5.1 Personal Conduct

5.1.1 Respect and Personal Integrity: All Players must conduct themselves in a way that is at all times consistent with (a) the Code of Conduct in this Section 10 (“Code of Conduct”) and (b) the general principles of personal integrity, honesty, and good sportsmanship. Players must be respectful of other Players, Tournament Administrators, observers, spectators, and sponsors (as applicable).

5.1.2 Toxic Behavior: Players shall not behave in a manner (a) which violates these Rules, (b) which is disruptive, unsafe or destructive, or (c) which is otherwise harmful to the enjoyment of NBA 2K26 by other users as intended by 2K Sports. In particular, Players shall not engage in harassing or disrespectful conduct, use of abusive or offensive language, Game sabotage, spamming, social engineering, scamming, or any unlawful activity (“Toxic Behavior”).

5.1.3 Impersonation or Glorification of Cheating: Players shall not (a) proclaim to be, or represent themselves as, a banned Player or a cheater/rule breaker, or (b) glorify or otherwise endorse the breaking or violation of these Rules. **Any violation of these Rules may expose a Player or an entire Team to disciplinary action, whether or not that violation was committed intentionally.

5.2 Competitive Integrity
Each Player is expected to play within the spirit of NBA 2K26 and these Rules at all times during any Game or Match. Any form of unfair play is prohibited by these Rules, and may result in disciplinary action. Examples of unfair play include the following:

Collusion, Match fixing or throwing, bribing a referee or Match official, or any other unfair or illegal action.

Hacking or otherwise modifying the intended behavior of the NBA 2K26 game client.

Playing or allowing another Player to play on an account registered in another person’s name.

Using any kind of cheating device, program, or similar cheating method to gain a competitive advantage.

Intentionally exploiting any game function (e.g., an in-game bug or glitch) in a manner not intended by 2K Sports in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Using distributed denial of service attacks, swatting, or similar methods.

Using macro keys or similar methods to automate in-game actions.

Accepting any gift, reward, bribe, or compensation for services promised, rendered, or to be rendered in connection with unfair play.

Interfering with the operation of the Tournament, the Rules Website, or any website owned or operated by VESL or the Tournament Administrators.

Using any Tournament facilities to post prohibited communications.

Disconnecting from the in-game lobby before being dismissed by Tournament Administrators.

Otherwise violating these Rules.

5.3 Harassment
Players are prohibited from engaging in any form of harassing, abusive, or discriminatory conduct, including any of the foregoing based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other status or characteristic protected under applicable law.

5.4 Confidentiality
A Player may not disclose to any third party any confidential information the Player obtains in connection with the Event, including by posting on social media channels.

5.5 Illegal Conduct
Players are required to comply with all applicable laws at all times. Any attempt to deliberately damage or undermine the legitimate operation of the Event may be in violation of criminal and civil laws and will result in disqualification from participation in the Event. If an attempt is made, Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL reserves the right to seek remedies and damages (including attorneys’ fees) to the fullest extent of the law, including criminal prosecution.

06. Publicity, Interview Consent +

6.1 Image and Likeness
By participating in the league you are giving Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL the rights to use your name, tag, likeness, image, voice, gameplay statistics, and/or VESL ID or other biographical information, for publicity purposes before, during, and after the Event, in any manner and media, throughout the world, in perpetuity, but only in connection with publicizing the Event or other events and programming, without any compensation or prior review.

6.2 Interviews
If you are given an opportunity to participate in an interview in connection with the Event (i.e., an “Interview”), you consent to be recorded for the Interview, and you hereby grant to Stiegler Ed Tech, Inc. / VESL a royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to grant sublicenses) to use your statements and any audio/video footage from the Interview, as well as your name, tag, likeness, image, voice, gameplay statistics, VESL ID, and other biographical information (collectively, “Interview Materials”) in connection with the Interview. Your participation in an Interview is voluntary, and you are not entitled to compensation for an Interview or this license. VESL has no obligation to interview you or use Interview Materials. You can withdraw this license at any time by contacting VESL Operations, however this will not affect any uses VESL has made of such license before the withdrawal.

Eligible students include Grades 9-13 in public, private, charter, homeschool, and virtual schools. A VESL STEM season lasts 9 weeks and consists of 4 phases:

The NotWork is VESL's official competition and community platform. It's where students access challenges, track progress, and engage in STEM and esports experiences throughout the season.

A team consists of 1-5 verified students from the same school

Teams of one (1) are allowed and not penalized

Students may only compete on 1 team at a time (across all topics)

Verification

A verified teacher or school representative is required for a student to receive full platform access. Student Verification is required to: join a team, contribute to team scores, earn Season Points (for North Carolina States qualification), redeem rewards, access Discord or community spaces, participate in Playoffs and (NC Only) States.

Students may become verified at any point before roster lock. Once verified, students can join a team, begin contributing to team scores, and become eligible for Playoffs and States. Unverified students may submit challenges and appear on individual leaderboards but do not contribute to team scores. These restrictions exist for safety and eligibility purposes.

Students are encouraged to help initiate or grow a VESL STEM team at their school. They can do so by reaching out to support@thenotwork.org.

Team Formation

Verified students can create or join STEM Teams directly on The NotWork. Students who create a team are automatically assigned as the Team Captain. Team Captains can invite other students from their school to join their team, or compete as a team of one. At any point during the season, Team Captains can transfer captain status to another team member, add new members, or remove existing members.

🚨 IMPORTANT: Team Changes & Roster Lock Team rosters lock at the start of Playoffs. No roster changes are permitted after this deadline. Students may join, leave, or change teams until rosters lock. Scores earned remain with the team they were earned on. Official roster lock date (Spring 2026): April 18, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST.

Late Joiners & Catch-Up Rules

Students may join a STEM team after the season has begun, up until the start of Playoffs. Late joiners:

May complete previously released challenges

May contribute to their team's Season Score

Do not earn coins for challenges released prior to their join date

Do not earn a score multiplier for previous Featured Challenges.

Coins are only awarded for challenges completed during the week they are featured.

Late joiners are responsible for managing completion independently.

3. Challenges & Submissions

Mastery Challenges

All VESL STEM challenges fall under "Mastery". No matter the topic, every challenge follows the same competitive structure:

Individual Score → Team Score → Season Points → Season Rankings → State Qualification (NC Only).

Challenges are designed in different formats to support different skills, learning styles, and career pathways. Some challenges focus on applied skill execution, performance under pressure, and hands-on technical practice. Others focus on project-based design (building & iteration), problem solving and creativity.

Only a student's highest score per challenge is used

Each challenge includes: Instructions, Submission expectations, Rubric criteria, Submission deadline.

Students may submit unlimited times before the deadline (May 2, 2026). Your highest score will be recorded. This allows you to: Refine based on feedback, Improve performance, Maximize your contribution to your team.

Completing a challenge late will impact your Season Score, but not coin earnings.

4. Scoring Mechanics

Individual Scoring Method

Individual submission scores are ranked against other individual submission scores for the same challenge. Individual leaderboards are published per challenge, per topic. Tiebreakers are implemented within each challenge, but Weekly XP may also be used as a tiebreaker.

Individual scores may be generated through: Automated scoring (e.g., correctness checks, system validation), and/or Judged scoring using a rubric (human or staff review), depending on the challenge format. Rubrics are available on each challenge submission page. Once judged, students can see how they were scored and review feedback for each rubric category.

Score ranges may vary by challenge. All scoring is evaluated relative to other submissions within the same challenge during the same week. Multiple submissions are allowed. There is no cap on resubmissions. The highest scored submission is used as the participant's official score for that challenge.

Team Scoring (How Teams Earn Points)

Team Score = Average of all individual scores on a team that are non-zero + a "team bonus" (dependent on # of teammates). Team scores are calculated per challenge to earn Season Points.

Zero Submissions & Visibility: If a team has no submissions for a challenge, it earns: 0 team score for that challenge, 0 Season Points for that challenge. Teams with zero submissions for a given challenge may be hidden from that challenge's leaderboard display. Season Leaderboards reflect total accumulated Season Points regardless of challenge-level visibility.

Season Points

Season Points are used to measure team performance over time and determine the top teams (NC Only: qualification for State Championships). Season Points are earned per challenge, based on how a team score places relative to other team scores in the same topic for that challenge. Season points accumulate per topic for the whole season to determine the top teams (For NC: state qualifiers). Team placement ties are broken by the highest individual score on the team for that challenge.

How Season Points Are Awarded (For each challenge):

Season Points are awarded based on team placement per challenge

Season Points accumulate across the season by topic

Season Points are awarded using a fixed placement scale, regardless of challenge type. Season standings may change as teams improve scores. Season standings remain live through the end of Playoffs.

Featured Week Multipliers

Each newly released weekly challenge is designated as a Featured Challenge. Submissions made during the Featured Week receive a score multiplier. All submissions made during the Featured Week are eligible for the multiplier; only the highest score. Submissions made after the Featured Week do not receive a multiplier. The multiplier is applied to their individual score before team score calculations. Coins and Featured Multipliers are only available for those that submitted during the Featured Week.

5. Leaderboards & Standings

VESL STEM uses multiple leaderboards throughout the season to track progress, performance, and qualification. Each leaderboard serves a different purpose. It is normal for teams or individuals to rank differently across leaderboards: XP rankings reward engagement. Weekly Winners reward peak performance. Season Leaderboards reward consistency. Each leaderboard measures a different aspect of participation.

Ongoing Leaderboards

XP Leaderboards track student engagement and activity during a given week. XP is earned by completing challenges, interacting with content, and engaging on the platform. XP leaderboards reset every Saturday at 11:59 PM EST. The top 3 XP earners (+ 3 lucky earners) each week receive coins and recognition. XP may be used as a tie-breaker for individual challenge rankings. XP rankings are separate from Team Scores and Season Points. They do not affect season performance (NC: State Championship qualification) directly.

Season Leaderboards

Weekly Winners (Featured Challenges): Weekly Winners highlight the top individual performers in Featured Weekly Challenges. Weekly Winners are selected from submissions made during the Featured Week. Coins are awarded based on individual performance. Weekly Winners are displayed by challenge, topic, and week. Weekly Winners reflect Featured Challenge performance only and do not determine State Championship qualification.

Challenge Leaderboards (Per Challenge): Each challenge has its own leaderboard that ranks teams based on their performance for that specific challenge. Team rankings are based on team score for the challenge. Team score is calculated using the averaging method defined in the Scoring section above. Teams are ranked relative to other teams in the same topic, in the same challenge. Challenge Leaderboards determine how Season Points are awarded each challenge.

Season Standings (By Topic): Season Leaderboards track total Season Points earned by teams across all challenges in a topic. Season Points accumulate over the Regular Season and Playoffs. Season Leaderboards are topic-specific. Rankings remain live through the end of Playoffs. Season Leaderboards determine the top teams (For NC: State Championship qualification). Final qualification is confirmed only after Playoffs conclude. A team's position on the Season Leaderboard reflects consistent performance over time, not just a single challenge result. Rankings may change until the final submission deadline (May 2, 2026). North Carolina teams should not assume qualification until qualifiers are officially announced (May 3, 2026).

Leaderboard Updates & Adjustments

Leaderboard data may update as: students submit or resubmit challenges, scores are improved, scoring corrections are made. VESL reserves the right to adjust leaderboards when necessary to ensure fair and accurate competition.

Tracking Progress & Standings

On The NotWork, you can monitor: Individual scores, XP earned, Team Season Score, Leaderboard rankings, Micro-credential progress. Deadlines and performance updates are visible directly on the platform.

6. Rewards & Progression

VESL STEM uses a progression system designed to reward skill development, consistency, and engagement throughout the season. Rewards are earned, tracked, and distributed through the official competition platform.

XP (Experience Points)

XP represents a student's engagement and participation within VESL STEM. XP reflects: Learning engagement, Platform interaction, Consistency over time.

How XP Is Earned: Students earn XP through actions including, but not limited to: Completing educational content, Interacting with the platform (e.g., bookmarking, sharing), Submitting STEM challenges, Participating in weekly activities. VESL reserves the right to add, remove, or adjust XP-earning actions. XP is tracked weekly.

Coins (Reward Currency)

Coins are the primary reward currency in VESL STEM and are earned through competitive performance during the season.

How Coins Are Earned:

Weekly Mastery: Top 3 individual scores in each featured weekly challenge.

Micro-Credentials

A Micro-Credential is a digital credential that verifies a student has completed and demonstrated skills through a VESL STEM challenge. Students earn micro-credentials in each challenge. Micro-credentials are awarded based on: Participation, Performance within the challenge. Each micro-credential represents a specific, industry-aligned skill set.

Purpose & Use of Micro-Credentials: Micro-credentials: Are optional but encouraged, Do not affect scoring or Season Points. Earned credentials may be shared on: Resumes, Linkedin profiles, College and scholarship applications. Micro-credentials serve as verifiable proof of skill, not prizes.

VESL expects all competitors to demonstrate: Academic honesty, Fair play, Respectful conduct, Ownership of submitted work.

Violations may result in: Score nullification, Loss of coins, Suspension from competition.

🚨 IMPORTANT: Plagiarism & Violations Finding someone else's work online and submitting it as your own is strictly prohibited.

Authority & Adjustments

All reward decisions made by VESL staff are final. VESL reserves the right to: Correct scoring or leaderboard errors, Adjust rankings due to bugs or judging issues, Modify rules with notice when necessary, Make final determinations on disputes, Adjust reward availability, Modify coin allocation, Substitute rewards as necessary.

VESL retains final authority over: Reward eligibility, Coin allocation, Redemption disputes, Prize fulfillment.

Mastery Challenge: A weekly challenge scored by rubric. All Mastery Challenges affect the team leaderboard.

XP: Experience points earned weekly. Used for weekly XP rewards.

Coins: Rewards earned only when a challenge is completed during its featured week.

Micro-Credential: A skill-based badge earned for demonstrated performance.

Playoffs: Advanced competitive phase after Regular Season.

State Championship: Final North Carolina event for qualified teams.

9. For Teachers (Supporting VESL STEM)

This section outlines how educators support participation, maintain eligibility, and help their students compete at a high level.

1. Teacher Responsibilities (Account & Student Verification)

Teachers (or other approved school staff) are responsible for verifying that students competing under their school are legitimate, enrolled students. Verification includes: Confirming student identity, Confirming school affiliation. Teachers do not approve STEM Teams. Students form and manage their own teams. Your verification ensures: Accurate team averages, Fair competition, Correct school representation. Student verification is completed directly on The NotWork Teacher Dashboard.

Team Formation

Students may: create teams, join existing teams, or compete as a team of one. Teachers are not responsible for approving teams but may: facilitate introductions between interested students, encourage balanced team formation, and support healthy collaboration.

Maintaining Eligibility & Roster Accuracy

Teachers should: Periodically confirm verified students are still enrolled, Encourage students to remain active and engaged, Ensure rosters are correct before Playoffs.

2. Monitoring Progress & Dashboards

Viewing Participation: Through the Teacher Dashboard, educators can: View all registered students at their school, Directly verify accounts, Monitor participation patterns. New NotWork features are actively being developed to expand visibility into student progress and communication tools.

Tracking Team Performance: Teams are scored as: Average of all non-zero individual scores + team bonus (based on team size). Teachers are encouraged to: Monitor weekly submissions, Encourage resubmission for higher scores, Remind students that consistency improves team averages.

Identifying Drop-Off or Disengagement: Watch for: Multiple missed weeks, Students who stop submitting, Declining participation before major milestones. Because team average matters, inactive students impact overall performance. Early encouragement can significantly improve outcomes.

3. Supporting Struggling or Disengaged Students

Common Student Challenges: Students may struggle with: Time management, Understanding rubric expectations, Technical submission confusion, Confidence or motivation.

Mentoring Without Doing the Work: Teachers are encouraged to support students in a mentor role. You may: Review rubrics with students, Help interpret feedback, Ask guiding questions, Support resubmission strategy. You should not: Complete work on their behalf, Substantially alter submissions, Script solutions for students. VESL STEM competition is designed to reflect authentic student skill development.

When to Intervene: Consider stepping in if: A student has missed multiple deadlines, A team's participation drops suddenly, A student appears confused about expectations. Small interventions early often prevent disengagement later.

Fully Student-Driven With Flexible Engagement Models: VESL is designed so students can compete independently with light teacher supervision. However, stronger engagement yields stronger outcomes. Many teachers choose to: Integrate VESL STEM Challenges into classroom activities, Use club time to collaborate on weekly challenges, Host weekly STEM work sessions, Offer extra credit for participation, Use challenges during substitute teacher days, Run after-school STEM labs. VESL adapts to your school structure, from minimal oversight to fully integrated curriculum support.

Motivating Consistency: Encourage students to: Compete every week, Resubmit for higher mastery scores, Pursue both Mastery & XP recognition, Monitor their team leaderboard position.

Preparing Students for States (North Carolina Only): All teams created during the season automatically advance to Playoffs. Before Playoffs: Ensure roster accuracy, Encourage full team participation, Reinforce revision strategy. For North Carolina teams: State Championship qualifiers are based on team performance. Qualifiers announced May 3, 2026. VESL works directly with qualified students to manage permission slips and logistics support where possible. VESL does not provide direct accommodations. Individual schools may require internal approvals. Teachers are welcome to support travel coordination if needed.

How to Win as an Individual Player?

There are multiple ways to win in VESL STEM:

Weekly Mastery Winners: Top 3 individual scores in each Weekly Featured Mastery Challenge.

Weekly XP Winners: Top 3 XP earners for the week. 3 additional "Lucky XP" winners randomly selected from all students who competed that week.

Season Recognition: Micro-credentials earned through performance, State Championships (North Carolina only), Prizes and recognition throughout the season.

What are STEM Teams? How do I join?

A STEM team consists of 1–5 students from the same school. Teams of one are allowed and not penalized.

You can find, join, or create a team at thenotwork.org/teams.

Note: You can only be on 1 team at a time across all topics.

Students are encouraged to help start or grow VESL at their school. You can do so by reaching out to support@thenotwork.org.

Why should I get verified?

You must be verified by a teacher to join a team, contribute to your team’s score, earn Season Points, or redeem rewards. Students may become verified at any point before roster lock.

Unverified students can submit challenges but won’t contribute to Team Scores or Season Points. These restrictions exist for safety and eligibility purposes.

Verification is also required to access Discord/community spaces and to participate in Playoffs + (NC Only) States.

What is the Featured Week bonus multiplier?

Every newly released weekly challenge is a Featured Challenge. Submit during the Featured Week (Sunday 12:00 AM to Saturday 11:59 PM ET) to get a bonus multiplier on your individual score.

Can I resubmit in challenges?

Yes! You can resubmit challenges as many times as you like until the May 2 deadline.

Only your highest score per challenge is used for the leaderboards.

How can my team and I maximize our scores?

Students and teams who consistently stand out follow these strategies:

Review the judging criteria (rubrics) before you submit your work.

Revise and resubmit to maximize your score based on the feedback you receive.

Compete every week to maintain high averages and earn both Mastery and XP opportunities. You can win weekly, but consistent competitors are the ones who rise over the full season.

Encourage your team: Every active teammate matters. Consistent participation improves the team average, while non-submitting members can pull the average down. If you don't submit, your score does not help your team.

How to Help Your STEM Team Win?

Your team's Season Score is calculated as: Average of all non-zero individual scores on the team + a team bonus (based on number of teammates). That means: Every active teammate matters. Consistent participation improves the average. More engaged teammates increase your team bonus. If you don't submit, your score does not help your team.

Strategic Participation During Featured Weeks: All Mastery Challenges impact the team leaderboard. To compete effectively: Make sure all teammates submit, Encourage resubmitting to maximize scores, Focus effort during high-skill challenges. Your team's average performance across weeks determines your overall team standing.

How many students do we need?

Teams may compete with 1-5 verified students from the same school. (Solo teams are allowed.)

Can students join late?

Yes! Up until Playoffs begin (see Late Join Policy).

Late joiners can complete past challenges and contribute to their team's Season Score. However, you will not earn coins retroactively for challenges released before your join date, nor will you receive a score multiplier for previous Featured Challenges. Late joiners are responsible for managing previous challenge completion independently.

What if a student misses a week?

They can still compete in all challenges. Missed featured weeks reduce opportunities for coins and featured week multipliers, but do not prevent continued participation.

Can students compete solo?

Yes. Students may compete as a team of one.

Do all Mastery Challenges affect team scores?

Yes.

Are there limits to how many coins I can earn?

No! There are no caps on coins earned per week or coins earned per season.

However, remember that while unverified students can earn coins, they cannot redeem them until they get verified.

What happens during Playoffs?

Playoffs are the final 2 weeks of the season (April 19 – May 2).

Playoff challenges are high-stakes. During this phase, an exclusive Playoffs multiplier applies to Season Points to help determine final State qualification (NC Only).

How do NC students qualify for State Championships?

Qualification is based on your final Season Leaderboard rank per topic at the end of Playoffs. The top teams per topic on the final Season Leaderboard qualify. Multiple teams from the same school may qualify. Students may qualify for States in multiple topics, with no cap on qualifications.

North Carolina teams should not assume qualification until qualifiers are officially announced (May 3, 2026).

You must compete at States with the same team and roster you used during the Playoffs.
At least one team member must attend to compete on behalf of the team.
